US Nordic Ventures has almost 100 years of experience in investing, consulting, government and management. We have applied the techniques and business discipline we have gained in our extensive experience to the challenges of evaluating and building successful new businesses. The following is a brief description of the backgrounds of our team:
- Benjamin Miller is President and CEO of Western Development Corporation since 2008, after joining the company in the early 2000 as a board member and then as COO. Under his stewardship Western Development has more than doubled in size, expanding projects under ownership and development to more than 3 million square feet [300,000 square meters]. Ben brings a background in finance, private equity and green building technology. Prior to joining Western Development, Ben was a part of the founding team of Democracy Alliance, an investment partnership of business and philanthropic leaders, and was responsible for the think tank and leadership investment portfolios.
Ben co-founded US Nordic Ventures, a private equity and operating company that invests in and joint ventures with Scandinavian firms. Prior to USNV, he was a manager in Business Development and Strategy for LYTE, Inc., a retail-technology start-up.
Ben has also worked as an analyst at Lubert-Adler, a $500+ million private equity real estate fund, and for venture capital firm IL Management.
- Tom Ross is the founder and managing partner of Potomac Ventures Capital, a $20 million fund focused on investing in early and mid-stage companies. Tom was previously a Director [senior partner] at McKinsey and Co. before leaving in 1997 to co-found Potomac Partners Management Consulting. At McKinsey, Tom was a leader of the firm's Information Technology practice, and served technology providers and users, particularly in the financial services and retail industries. Earlier in his career, Tom was a Managing Partner at Andersen Consulting, a cabinet member in Illinois state government, and comptroller of a $12 billion federal agency. Tom has started two successful businesses. In 1988, he founded The Information Consulting Group, which in 15 months grew to over 200 professionals and was acquired by McKinsey and Co. in 1989. In 1997, Tom founded Potomac Partners Management Consulting, an ecommerce consulting firm that was acquired by Luminant Worldwide in 1999. Tom serves, or has served, on the Board of a number of start-ups, including Potomac Partners, Energy Performance Systems, SafeRent, Away, LoanChannel, Zgraffiti and Infirmation.
- Herb Miller, a well-known and experienced entrepreneur, has been at the leading edge of major retail development in the US and created such concepts as urban specialty shopping malls, power centers and super-regional value and entertainment malls. He founded Western Development Corporation in 1967 and built it into one of the country's premier retail development companies, with over 20 million SF [2 million square meters] of projects valued at over $3 billion. In 1985, Herb created the "Mills Concept" of value retail in a super-regional mall format and expanded the concept by founding The Mills Corporation in 1993, which was capitalized at $1.3 billion through a public stock offering on the NYSE. Herb chaired the Mills Corporation until 1995.
- Steve Lorberbaum joins the team from Edge Financial, a start up specialty finance company, where he served as President and was responsible for building a $30M pipeline of transactions for Edge’s premium finance loan origination business. Prior to that, Steve served as Chief Operating Officer of Seneca One Finance and grew Seneca One to one of the preeminent providers of financial services to lottery winners and annuity recipients. He also served as Vice President of Operations and General Counsel at Peak Technologies, a $250M multinational system integrator of automatic data capture hardware and software and was responsible for leading a strategic restructuring of the back office operations of Peak.
Steve practiced law; both as a partner of Preminger and Roscher, a boutique real estate firm in Washington, DC, and in general counsel roles in the telecommunications, software and real estate fields.
- Jim Gdula is head of development, recently joining us from Turnberry Associates, where he was Vice President of Retail Development and responsible for over 5 million square feet of retail and office developments, including open-air, super regional lifestyle centers. Prior to his employment with Turnberry Associates, Jim served as President of IKEA General Partners and as a consultant to various public and private real estate development companies.
Jim also has served in a number of high profile leasing, development and legal positions including Senior Vice President - National Accounts for The Mills Corporation, Senior Vice President-Acquisitions for Saul Centers and Development Counsel to Western Development Corporation and BF Saul Company.
Board of Advisers
US Nordic Ventures is in the process of building its Board of Advisors. The Board of Advisers will provide counsel on investing and managing the fund's portfolio.
- Stephen M. Ross is Chairman, CEO and founder of Related Companies, which develops, manages and finances some of the US's finest real estate properties. Related portfolio includes more than $11 billion in real estate assets spread over 47 states, including nearly 140,000 residential units and nearly 7 million square feet [700,000 square meters] of commercial space. Mr. Ross is a founder and director of Charter Municipal Mortgage Acceptance Company and a director of Insignia Financial Group, Inc. and the Real Estate Board of New York.
- Don Perkins is the former CEO of Jewel Companies, Inc and is an active Board member of a number of companies, including Aon, LaSalle Hotel Properties and LaSalle US Realty Income and Growth Fund. He is a former Board member of Lucent Technologies, Time Warner, Cummins Engine, AT&T, Kmart and several other Fortune 500 companies.
- Samuel Rachlin was the first Anchorman and Managing Editor of Denmark's first private-sector television channel, TV2 Denmark, from 1987-1990. Samuel was Media Advisor for the World Bank from 1995 to 1998. He is presently producing Denmark's first pure financial news shows á la CNBC.
- Jim Cannon has worked within government at the state level and both the Congressional and Presidential branch of the Federal government. He served as a political adviser for Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Domestic Policy Adviser to President Ford, and Chief of Staff to Majority Senate Leader Howard Baker.
